Daniel Perry

Daniel Perry was a 17-year-old man who was tormented into killing himself as part of an online plot to extort money from him.

Perry was a popular teenager from Dunfermline, Fife, who took his own life after being targeted by a group of Internet trollers who exploited him for their own gain. Known as ‘chatroom bobs’ (or simply ‘bobs’) the type of Internet troller who targeted Daniel Perry do not post abusive messages like Hater trolls do (called ‘flame trolling’), but friendly ones to seduce them (called ‘kudos trolling’).

Perry took his own life after a Skype conversation with a person he was led to believe was a girl the same age as him. Suddenly a gang then hijacked the chat and threatened to show the video to his family and friends, unless he paid them menaces (i.e. money). Known as ‘Nigerian Chatroom Bobs,’ due to an urban myth that it is mostly people in Nigeria who extort money from people online. These trollers will use all means to gain the confidence of someone and then extort money from them, which in Daniel Perry’s case was attempted through blackmail.

The 3 Types of Lolcow

Lolcow, n. A type of Internet user who will get into conflicts online, such as on bulletin boards, and will then be targeted continually by other users of that website because of their compulsion to act the same way as got them trolled in the first place.

Of the 12 types of Internet trolling, three of them can be singled out as Lolcows – The Big Man, the Ripper and the Chatroom bob.

Lolcow Type Description
Big Man Driven by ‘Order’ forces. A Big Man does trolling by posting something pleasing to others in order to support their world view. They hold strong and unchangeable opinions and will be targeted because of this. Big Men enjoy this attention more than others would want.
Ripper Driven by ‘Thanatotic’ forces. A Ripper takes part in self-deprecating trolling in order to build a false sense of empathy from others. They usually have issues no one wants to help them with offline and so use online communities to seek help. Because they ignore others’ suggestions – just wanting attention – they become targets for regular abuse and often retort “I was only trolling.
Chatroom Bob Driven by ‘Existential’ forces. A chatroom bob takes part in trolling to gain the trust of others members in order to exploit them. They usually use online communities for their own purposes, more often than not with a sex-related motive. They are targeted because people see them as ‘creeps,’ and despite their high opinions of their appeal they struggle to achieve it.

Caroline Criado-Perez

Criado-Perez, Caroline. Caroline Criado-Perez campaigned for women to feature on banknotes on the BBC World News Panel Discussion programme, as can be seen in the video below.

Following this broadcast Caroline Criado-Perez was subject to about 50 abusive tweets an hour for about 12 hours in a row from what are technically called ‘Rape-callout chatroom bobs‘. Caroline Criado-Perez reported the abuse on Twitter to the police, many comments of which made rape threats. She made a statement on Twitter saying she had “many more threats to report.” A 21-year-old man from Manchester was arrested.

Chatroom bob

Chatroom bob, n. A chatroom bob takes part in trolling to gain the trust of others members in order to exploit them. Driven by ‘Existential’ forces.

The term is derived from the meme ‘Uncle Bob,’ which refers to someone in a family who is a sex predator to younger family members. In terms of online communities ‘chatroom bob’ has most traditionally referred to someone who requests naked pictures of someone in a chatroom, in a way they would never do in person.

David Peters

David Peters, who was 24 at the time of his offence, was convicted for blackmailing a 14-year-old girl into posting nude pictures of herself online. The rock musician pleaded guilty at Dumbarton Sheriff Court to allowing indecent photos to be taken and distributed of a teenage girl. Peters is a clear cut example of Internet troller known as a ‘chatroom bob,’ who are online abusers who go out of their way to get others to send them sexually explicit images for their own enjoyment. When the girl deleted her account, Peters contacted the teenager’s friends, leading to her reporting him to the police. By this point he had posted the nude photographs of her to the Internet for all to see, a process called ‘porn e-venging.’ According to the Daily Record newspaper, after the girl blocked Peters on Facebook, he sent a series of “spine-chilling” messages to the teenager. One read, “Tell the ******* slag she better find a ******* way to get on msn because I’m about to slaughter her,” and another, “I’m absolutely about to murder *****, she’s got about 10 minutes to unblock me and get the *** on msn or I will actually see her in person after work on Monday”.

Matthew Fisher

Matthew Fisher, who was 32 at the time, from Crewkerne, was convicted at South Somerset Magistrates Court in Yeovil after sending sexually explicit texts messages to a 14-year-old girl.

A clear chatroom bob, even though he claimed he did not find his victim “sexually attractive”, Fisher admitted six counts of sending messages that were grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character, under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, and was given an eight-week custodial sentence that was suspended for three years.

The court heard how Fisher, who since 2008 had been teaching guitar to the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sent the messages whilst drunk on 6 March 2009.

Tim Rutherford, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was a self-employed music teacher and the girl was his pupil and the messages were very explicit in their nature and content.

“While the girl accepted she responded to his messages, she said she never instigated any of them.

A request for a sexual offences order to be placed on Fisher was turned down because magistrates ruled that his offences did “not warrant it”. The case raises questions about the effectiveness of trolling legislation for prosecuting offences that legislation designed for use in the real world might be more appropriately used for.

Anthony Hollister

Anthony Hollister of High Street, Pontypool, who was 30 at the time of his prosecution, pleaded guilty at Swansea Crown Court to two offences of sexually grooming and meeting a child under 16 following sexual grooming and one count of having sex with the girl in December 2009.

The girl, from Swansea, told Hollister she was 17 and he told her he was in his 20s, knowing she was actually 15. A typical chatroom bob, he met the girl on the Internet in January 2009, regularly contacting her though chatrooms, Facebook, and mobile phone calls and texts. Robert Du Val, defending, said the girl sent a photograph to Hollister that was “consistent with her representations that she was 17”.

Julian Morrell

Julian Morrell of Morrell, who was 42 at the time of his offence, who struck off the medical register of the GMC, following grooming and having sex with a 14 year old girl on the Internet and viewing pornography.

A clear chatroom bob, the psychiatrist posted as a 17-year-old-boy, called Jules, and used a chatroom, called ‘Pre-Teen’ to seduce the girl for his own purposes. The man, telling the girl he was actually 24, took the girl’s virginity in a tent at a camp-site in Wales.

He exchanged numerous emails and text messages for over a month, and sexually assaulted her. As soon as they found out, the man’s parents phoned the police.  period before Morrell drove from his London home to a Welsh camp-site last August.

Judge Merfyn Hughes QC sentenced Morrell at Caernarfon Crown Court for the grooming charge and four years for each of  the two counts of sexual activity with a child, saying to him: “You used your professional skill and expertise in order to gain the trust of your victim and you had personal and professional insight into what consequences your victim may suffer.

Robert Trevor Jones, prosecuting, told, “It is not alleged the sexual intercourse was non-consensual although it was clearly contemplated and pursued by the defendant and the girl was at first hesitant and a naive partner.

The following month the married father-of-two again drove to the campsite and had sex with her. By October, the girl’s parents found out and called the police.

Gary Geoffrey Thomas

Gary Geoffrey Thomas, of Frank Bodicote, Swadlincott, South Derbyshire, who was 37 at the time of his sex offence, used chatrooms to groom and have sex four times with an 14-year-old girl from Newtown in Wales.

Judge Huw Daniel jailed Thomas, at sentenced his to an order, banning the chatroom bob from using the Internet or mobile phone for the following five years. The order was suggested by prosecuting barrister Steven Everett, who said that the idea had come from child protection officers working for Dyfed Powys police.

Judge Daniel, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said about the use of the order for chatroom bobs. “It is high time that was examined. The judiciary cannot do anything about it. It is a matter for Parliament,’ he said. £The maximum sentence I could pass would be two years. This is the idiocy of it. There is very little scope to operate a sentencing exercise that takes into account his undoubted paedophilia. It should be something in the order of 10 years in my judgment.”

Continuing the judge said. “The maximum sentence for these offences are two years and I have to take into account your pleas of guilty.” “I regard these offences as being aggravated by the fact that you are a predatory paedophile.” “The sooner that you come to terms with that description the better it will be for everyone, especially young girls.”

The girl in question was one of 15 girls he had contact with aged between 13 and 16, and Thomas would visit then when their parents were way. One girl did not realise he was over 20 until it was too late, and was gulled by Thomas into thinking he loved her, especially when he turned up with flowers.

TheA police investigation found Thomas made 1,700 calls to the Newtown girl, even after she told him to stop.
